Episode #60: A Surprising Twist on Summer Food

Join us this week for a new take on summer food – using the freezer! While it’s not often thought of as a tool for summertime food, we make a case for freezer meals to help on busy summer nights or when you don’t want to do much cooking. We talk about what freezes well, how we decide if a recipe can be frozen, and give a full list of freezer meals for you to try!

Episode #61: Food Blogging and Whole30 with Erin Jensen

This interview is with Erin Jensen of The Wooden Skillet, a food blog dedicated to healthy-ish food. Erin has a great story about transitioning from an attorney to a full-time food blogger, photographer, content creator, and small business owner. She gives some tips on how to transition into eating more whole foods and shares her meal-planning routine.

Paprika App Review: Pros and Cons

Paprika is a recipe management app that lets you collect recipes and generate a grocery list of items. See what Roni likes and dislikes about this app and how it differs from Plan to Eat.

Notable Update:

Our most recent app version has a lot of updates and we want to highlight one in particular: pages staying open when switching between tabs.

What this means:

The app will remember which pages you have open when you switch between the Cook, Plan, and Shop tabs.

Why we love this update:

When you’re cooking a recipe, you can switch over to the shopping list to add items and then go back to the  Plan tab and the recipe will still be open.

Or you can cook from two recipes at once. You can open a recipe in both the recipe book and meal planner and then toggle between them. Like this cold noodle salad and the Thai peanut dressing that goes with it. (You can also do this with planned recipes from the Cooking View.)

Mobile App Updates

As always, the development team is working hard to fix bugs and build new features for the iOS and Android apps! This month we released version 3.1.0.

Features:

  • The Cook, Plan, and Shop tabs now remember what pages you opened on them, even if you navigate away from the tab. This should make it easier to multitask. For example, you could start cooking your planned recipes in the planner, check your shopping list, and come back to the planner without losing your place. Please note that forms do not stay open if you switch tabs at this time, so be sure to save your work first!
  • We updated the action sheet that appears when you tap “Add Recipe.” Hopefully, the options make a bit more sense now!
  • We updated the header for the recipe settings page.
  • If you plan a frozen recipe and select it in your planner, the “View Recipe” option in the action sheet will tell you how many servings the recipe was expected to yield.

Bug fixes:

  • We added a token to allow people that are not logged in at app.plantoeat.com in their mobile browser to print their recipes correctly.
  • When importing a recipe using the Recipe Clipper, the URL input will not auto-focus unnecessarily and will no longer open the user’s keyboard.
  • We fixed how the app handles crashes. It should now reset properly when things go wrong!
  • We fixed some animation bugs. Duplicating a recipe and editing a frozen recipe’s quantity should now animate the page like the rest of the app.
  • We fixed a bug preventing the frozen recipe view’s count from updating after you edit the recipe’s meal quantity.
  • We fixed a few bugs preventing unsaved change warnings from appearing. The app should warn you if you have modified a form and try to leave the page without saving your changes.
  • We fixed a bug preventing staples list item notifications from appearing. The form should now notify you that your item was added successfully, just like the shopping list item form.
  • We fixed a visual bug with recipe titles associated with a shopping list item.
  • We fixed a bug with the Android back button, so it can now close out of the app.

Desktop Updates:

  • Photos with a URL of over 255 characters will now import correctly.
  • We fixed a bug that caused remote photos to not be saved when removing or restoring draft recipes.
  • We fixed importing total time data from websites, such as seriouseats.com.
  • We fixed a bug causing some external recipe photos to not appear right after a recipe was imported.

“Having been shopping & preparing meals for over 40 years, I thought I had a good system. This app takes my good system and makes it great. It has been super helpful during the holidays & with large gatherings because you can easily update the servings for a recipe and it automatically updates your shopping list to reflect the changes.”
