Review Post: Paleo Indulgences

This smart little cookbook comes along just in time to satisfy the cravings of any gluten-free ghosts, goblins, and ghouls in your house. In her new cookbook, Paleo Indulgences, Tammy Credicott has cleverly recreated favorite candy treats to be gluten-free and refined-sugar-free. Practically all of these recipes are also dairy-free and many are egg-free. Truffles, toffee, caramels, candy bark, marshmallows–it’s all here. My favorite so far? Definitely the Almond Oh Joys. The Sweetie Pie and I have been sneaking them from the fridge all day.

And if your little hobgoblins are craving something to go with their post-trick-or-treating hot cocoa? It’s here too. Muffins, scones, tea bread, cookies, and crackers–all grain-free, cleverly created, and (by my sampling) delicious.

Delicious as they are, if you’re new to paleo or grain-free baking, you’ll need to adjust your expectations. The gingerbread pancakes, for example, do not taste like the gingerbread pancakes you would get from IHOP. And while the pancakes from IHOP are undeniably delicious, they are not terribly nourishing. Tammy Credicott’s gingerbread pancakes, on the other hand, are an ideal breakfast food. There’s no sweetener added to the pancakes, which I appreciate. My sugar tolerance fluctuates from day-to-day and so some mornings I will drown my pancakes in the cinnamon maple syrup (which recipe follows the gingerbread pancake recipe). Other mornings I will eat them plain with butter.

I was also surprised and delighted to find an entire chapter filled with savory salads and main courses. I’m especially eager to try out the BBQ Beef and Chicken and Dumpling recipes (are my daisy dukes showing??) I couldn’t resist pulling together the Antipasto Salad right away. It looked so darn delicious I ran out to the store to buy all the ingredients. It was totally worth the effort.

If you’re looking for a paleo cookbook that feels approachable and familiar; that allows you to give up grains and gluten without giving up pizza, muffins, and cookies; that removes refined sugar from your diet but not the sweet treats; Paleo Indulgences may just be the cookbook you’ve been waiting for. It’s one I’ll be revisiting again and again.
