The success of our family outings is largely determined by the quality of snacks that accompany them. A simple trip to the park down the street can become a lifelong memory if it has the right snack, so I am always keeping my eyes open for ways to make the snack-management easier. The Little Green Pouch caught my attention to help with just that.
You may have seen products in your grocery stores in disposable squeeze packets. Snacks packaged like this are a great idea because they are so easy to toss into a backpack and head out on the adventure. However, I am hesitant to buy them because I often don’t trust the food that went into them, and the trustworthy brands can be really expensive for a few ounces of a simple snack.
The Little Green Pouch is a similar idea, but a better alternative because you can put whatever ingredients you would like into them at a fraction of the cost of prepackaged snacks. Little Green Pouches are pretty simple: the top contains an opening in which 6 to 7 ounces of food can be inserted and closed using a zipper seal. From baby food to smoothies to savory veggies, pretty much anything that can come out of your blender can go into these pouches. Their website has some recipe inspiration geared toward younger kids, but also many others are for all ages – even chocolate pudding! Websites like The Blender Girl and Simple Green Smoothies recipes will also work, but really, anything you like can be used in the pouch.
With the food contained in the pouch you can toss it in your bag and head wherever you are going, or toss it into the freezer for another day. When you get hungry you simply unscrew the white cap and enjoy the contents. Cleaning the pouch is easy in your dishwasher and you are ready for the next snack. Nothing goes into the trash.
Anyone who has children will quickly see the applications. Whether you are going to the zoo, the park, or the backyard — what parent doesn’t love easy grab-n-go-style snacks? And when everyone is done with their Little Green Pouch snacks you can put the empty pouches back in your backpack where they take up no room at all. Snacks complete. Proceed with the day.
What came as a surprise to me is how useful they are for adults. I guess we need to eat too. In the weeks that I have been testing the Little Green Pouches I have tossed them into the pocket of my cycling jersey as I head out for a ride, packed them in my bag in preparation for a day of meetings, and used them on hikes. They are handy for those of us who want to eat great snacks but are unsure of what will be available when we arrive wherever we are going.
My wife also found them useful to help her manage her severe food allergies too. Whenever we leave the house for more than two hours she will have to bring her own food with her. It’s a huge hassle that inevitably results in carrying handfuls of empty Tupperware after she has eaten the contents. The Little Green Pouch was a lifesaver on a recent trip because there was no way we were going to fit Tupperware into the limited space of our luggage. But the pouches solved that problem and allowed her to pack the nutrition that she needed for the long trip without taking up tons of space. Phew!
The package that we received from Little Green Pouch is their Starter Kit containing 4 pouches, a collapsible mini funnel, a roll of labels, and a Little Green Pouch bottle brush. The pouches are easy to fill and don’t require a funnel, but it is nice to have one to make the job a little easier. The bottle brush is also handy, but if you rinse the pouches soon after you consume the contents they are easy enough to clean in the dishwasher.

“What if the zipper comes open in my bag?” asks our inquisitive 10 year old. This question quickly set off an impromptu experiment to see how much weight the Little Green Pouch can withstand before the seal bursts open. We started by placing the pouch between two boards. Next, very scientifically, we placed a 15 pound cinder block on top of the board. No problem. I placed another 15 pound cinder block on top of the board for a total of 30 pounds. Again, no problem. For lack of finding anything better to add weight to the experiment I grabbed a 32 pound propane tank and placed it on top of the cinder blocks. With a total weight of 62 pounds, the pouch almost held, but then burst open.
I suppose that if I wrecked my bike and landed directly the Little Green Pouch in the pocket of my cycling jersey that I might have smoothie all over my back, but I can’t imagine 62 pounds of direct pressure to a pouch that is in a backpack or a purse.
The recipe for the Green Smoothie Milkshakes below is from the Little Green Pouch website and has quickly become a favorite in our household. It is so good that, admittedly, we often drink it before it reaches the Little Green Pouch, but only if we have no need to go anywhere. And that’s the thing – everyone needs to go somewhere sometime, so why not make it easy to take a great little homemade snack with you?
